All Publicity is not Good Publicity!
SINAI GOVERNOR & MINISTER OF TOURISM ISSUE DECREE TO PROTECT SHARKS
Oriental Rivoli recently proved the old adage wrong that there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Supporters of HEPCA found a photo of a dead shark being displayed on a buffet table at the hotel’s New Year Eve party. HEPCA also received news that a popular grocery chain (Awlad Ragab) was also selling shark meat in their fish stock.
Within 48 hours of HEPCA posting the image on it’s website, the post went viral as members and supporters demanded action be taken.
HEPCA immediately made contact with both the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Tourism which lead to South Sinai Governor issuing Administrative Decree No. 4 (2013) prohibiting the display or sale of any endangered or protected marine species. The Sinai Chamber of Hotels have also committed to raising awareness about shark protection amongst Sinai hotels.
The grocery store immediately removed the shark meat and, after an internal investigation, deemed that the breach of their environmental compliancy policy only occurred in Sharm el-Sheikh, and blacklisted the supplier. They have also started to prepare internal training courses to ensure such an occurrence does not happen again.
The Oriental Rivoli however initially released a statement saying that the shark was not caught locally but in the Gulf of Suez (so that’s alright then). Once they seemingly realized the extent of the public ire they had incurred (and people stating they had either cancelled reservations with the hotel or would not be using the hotel again), they then released a second statement stating that the shark was in fact a fake shark made by a local artist for their celebrations. There were also poor attempts by either friends or employees of the hotel defending this second statement on various social media networks stating that the hotel worked very hard for the protection and preservation of the marine environment, and it was so obviously a fake shark. When other users asked who the artist was, the materials used, why the artist had created a model of a decomposing shark that had to be kept on ice rather than a healthy, vibrant living shark they were met with silence. Mmm ...
We’d like to applaud HEPCA, the Ministries and Awlad Ragab for their responses and actions in this matter and only wish we could say the same for the Oriental Rivoli.
